Motor Vehicle Excise

If you own a registered motor vehicle or trailer, you have to pay a tax, called a motor vehicle and trailer excise, each year. Motor vehicle excise bills are generated by the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Bills are mailed to the last known mailing address that the registry has on file. Bills are issued in January or February annually, and you are paying for that calendar year.

The excise rate is $25 per $1,000 of your vehicle's value. Excise taxes are due 30 days from the date of issue.

If you feel you do not owe this excise tax, do not ignore it! Please contact the Assessor's Office at 978-388-8102, to find out if you are entitled to an abatement. If you choose to ignore this bill, it will continue to accrue interest and fees.
