    Home Base Book Club

Did you know participating in a book club can be fun and therapeutic?

Book clubs are a unique approach that can support participant’s personal and therapy goals.  This can include cognitive skills such as attention, memory and executive function skills as well as addressing psychological components including social communication skills, pragmatic skills, confidence, and the ability to cope with deficits. Improvement in these skills have been shown to positively impact quality of life including socialization, self-expression, learning and leisure

Book clubs can provide a supportive environment without being a support group.  They can assist with the transition from therapy to community, provides an environment to assist with generalization of trained skills and strategies and provide a fun and social activity with others.

Participants should be able to read (or listen on audiobook) to 50-60 pages a week and be able to answer questions related to the reading.

Attendance to all classes is recommended as each week will build on from the last.

    September 27, 2022, 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM
    @

Cognition is our thinking skills including attention, memory, or executive functioning.  Difficulty with cognition may present as trouble paying attention in a conversation, remembering a person’s name, misplacing keys or difficulty completing items on a “to do” list.

Changes in cognition can occur following a concussion, traumatic brain injury or be impacted by other health problems including PTSD, poor sleep, or stress. Difficulties may be lifelong or may present more of a challenge based on a situation, such as starting a new job.

In the introduction to Cognitive Health Group, you gain a better understanding of why you might be having cognitive difficulties.  You will also learn strategies and systems to help improve attention, memory, and executive function skills. The goal is to gain knowledge on the tools that you can use when faced with a cognitive challenge.

When: Tuesdays 11-12.  Next round beings Tuesday Sept. 27th, 2022

Attendance to all classes is recommended as each week will build on the last topic.

    Duration: 8 weeks

Where: Group will be held virtually.  Participants must be in Massachusetts

Eligibility: Veterans who have history of Traumatic Brain Injury or concussion and have cognitive complaints
